Press Release
FaceTime is First to Enable Secure Local Authentication for the AOL® Instant Messenger™ (AIM®) Service
Newest Version of IMAuditor Offers Most Secure Password Authentication in Local
Network and Message Encryption for the AIM Service
FOSTER CITY, CA - March 21, 2005 - FaceTime Communications, the leading provider of
solutions that secure, manage, and extend instant messaging (IM) and
peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, today announced that its long-time partner,
America Online, Inc, has chosen FaceTime once again to offer an industry first
to its customers. FaceTime is the first company that AOL has entrusted with the
responsibility and authority to federate with its messaging network. The new
capability in FaceTime's IMAuditor server will process, authenticate and manage
customers' passwords and identification information within their local networks
thus removing the requirement to send this confidential data through the
Internet to AOL. In addition, FaceTime will provide the trusted technology that
decrypts and logs encrypted messages sent over the AIM service to enable
secure, compliant enterprise instant messaging practices.
"Entrusting passwords for the AIM service to a third party is a major
responsibility," said Brian Curry, vice president, AOL Premium and Subscription
Services, America Online, Inc. "This announcement indicates the level of trust
we have in FaceTime and the strength of their technology to securely
authenticate and manage passwords and IDs, as well as log and decrypt encrypted
messages sent through the AOL® messaging network. FaceTime has done a great job
of bringing the highest level of security to the AIM service as its use grows
in the workplace."
With this announcement, FaceTime introduces IMAuditor 5.2, which extends the
enforcement of information security and corporate and regulatory compliance
policies to IM occurring among employees with those external to the corporate
network. With IMAuditor 5.2, customers will benefit from increased security and
improved performance by authenticating their Screen Names and passwords on the
AIM service on premise and completely within their own corporate networks.
"Our strong, historical partnership with America Online and robust solutions
for the AIM service have led to FaceTime's selection as the first IM security
and management provider to offer local authentication, message decryption and
logging for customers using the AIM service," said Christopher Dean, senior
vice president of Business Development for FaceTime Communications. "We are
pleased to enable customers to continue leveraging the value of IM while
ensuring stringent compliance regulations are met with a secure, end-to-end
encryption solution."
In addition to IMAuditor's information security and management capabilities,
including: IM logging, auditing, and reporting; administration of segmented
usage policies; controlled dissemination and protection of sensitive corporate
data; challenge-response spim control and virus scanning for file transfers,
IMAuditor 5.2 offers the ability to display formatting and graphics in message
reports. This enables customers to save the full context of messages including
formatting for the most accurate and complete record of all instant messages.
"America Online's decision to allow FaceTime to manage customers' network
authorization behind the firewall, coupled with FaceTime's ability to send
instant messages securely through the AOL messaging network, will significantly
enhance network security for enterprises that use the AIM service," said
Michael Osterman, of Osterman Research. "Local authentication and encryption
are key components in making IM a more useful and secure business tool."
