Press Release
Yankee Group and FaceTime Conduct Study on Enterprise Instant Messaging Usage
Free Trials of FaceTime's Industry-Leading IM Security, Management and Control
Solutions Expected to Provide "Eye-Opening" Account of IM Behavior in the
Enterprise
FOSTER CITY, Calif.-November 6, 2003 -- Furthering its leadership as the premier
provider of security, management and control solutions for instant messaging
(IM) and other forms of real-time communications in the enterprise, FaceTime
Communications today announced it is working with the Yankee Group on a major,
first-of-its-kind research effort to compile comprehensive IM usage details,
user behavior, application integration strategies and future deployment plans
across hundreds of global enterprises. FaceTime's collaboration with Yankee
Group will provide medium-to-large businesses with the opportunity to "test
drive" FaceTime's industry-leading IM solutions, which over 300 enterprises
have already licensed for the secure and controlled use of multi-network
instant messaging. The report is scheduled for publication in 2004 and will be
made available to all participants in the study.
"The Yankee Group is very pleased to have FaceTime participating in this
groundbreaking research study," states Paul Ritter, program manager for
collaboration research at the Yankee Group. "FaceTime has a long history of
leadership in enabling its customers to enforce business work flow policies for
instant messaging. This is the first undertaking of its kind, and with FaceTime
we are able to compile very detailed IM usage data and obtain profound insight
on IM user behavior. The end result will be a comprehensive understanding of
enterprise usage scenarios that may be a wake-up call for many organizations."
As the architect of the IM security and management industry, FaceTime is widely
credited for its important role in the widespread application of centrally
controlled multi-network instant messaging to critical business functions in
the enterprise. FaceTime was chosen by Yankee to enable the gathering of
critical, yet currently unavailable data to Fortune 1000 organizations
requiring evidence of IM's risks and benefits in order to adequately assess
their enterprise IM needs. Information for the report will be provided by
medium-to-large enterprises across a myriad of industries that opt to leverage
a free trial of FaceTime's IM solutions to anonymously track employee IM usage
and provide Yankee with the usage data for detailed analysis. The data will
include IM session frequency, department usage, peak hours, average duration,
and reasons for session initiation. A separate online survey will provide
additional insight into enterprise concerns regarding the security, compliance
and management issues posed by IM use, and will examine the use of other
applications such as Web conferencing, collaboration and video communications
by the hundreds of organizations participating in the project.
"There are many IM adopters who can attest to their dependence on IM and its
productivity benefits, but until now, no tangible evidence existed," said
FaceTime's President and CEO Glen D. Vondrick. "Companies that opt to
contribute their usage data will benefit from a free trial complete with full
technical support of FaceTime's tremendously popular IM solutions, which we
believe will immediately provide them with an eye-opening account of how IM is
being used throughout their organization."
The data provided to the Yankee Group will not contain any information
pertaining to the actual text or video content of any IM sessions, employee
names, content or information from files transferred, or proprietary company
information that may be collected by the software being used. Only IM usage and
reporting details will be provided to the Yankee Group, not company names. The
sponsors of this research study will not receive specific information on IM
usage by any single firm, but only on an aggregated analyzed basis.
Organizations interested in participating in this study for a free trial of
FaceTime's industry-leading IM security, management and control solutions, a
complimentary copy of the Yankee Group report, and the chance to win a Logitech
QuickCam web camera are encouraged to visit
