Press Release
FaceTime Announces Instant Messaging for Oracle® Application Server Portal
IM Software and Services Leader Delivers Presence Awareness to Enterprise
Portals
FOSTER CITY, Calif. - September 8, 2003 -- Furthering its leadership as the
premier provider of security, management and control solutions for instant
messaging (IM) and other forms of real-time communications in the enterprise,
FaceTime Communications, an active member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork, today
announced the introduction of IM Presence Manager for Oracle® Application
Server Portal. IM Presence Manager enables enterprise customers to leverage the
power of presence awareness within their enterprise portal. The announcement
was made at OracleWorld, being held this week in San Francisco, California.
Presence awareness, the root technology behind IM's core value, allows users to
instantly detect the online availability of other users and connect with them
in real-time. With the FaceTime-enabled presence aggregation capabilities
running within Oracle Application Server Portal, customers will be able to
detect the availability of an individual or project group and engage in
real-time communication, regardless of the enterprise or public instant
messaging network, all within a multitude of shared business applications and
processes.
"The integration of instant messaging and presence into business portals is a
response to the business need to foster greater collaboration within remote
work environments," said Robert Mahowald, research manager at IDC. "The
beneficiaries of 'contextual collaboration' relationships between vendors like
Oracle and FaceTime are clearly business users, who can work more productively
in these presence-enabled portals to collaborate where and when they want, as
opposed to toggling back and forth between application silos."
Oracle Application Server Portal offers a rich environment for creating a
portal Web interface, publishing and managing information, accessing dynamic
data, and customizing the portal experience. Enabling Oracle Application Server
Portal with presence allows users to detect and communicate with other users
within the context of the subject matter. For instance, when searching for
corporate resources or documents via the Oracle Application Server Portal,
users can detect whether the author is available to answer questions. One such
application might include a support help desk, where users can detect and
connect with an HR administrator in real-time for answers to questions about
specific benefits or policies.
"FaceTime demonstrates continued leadership by delivering on the promise of
presence awareness as a killer app and integrating it into a variety of
enterprise applications," said FaceTime's vice president of products and chief
technology officer, Jonathan Christensen. "Oracle Application Server Portal
provides customers with a complete, integrated application server for fast,
reliable, and scalable applications. By integrating our IM Presence Manager
into Oracle Application Server Portal, enterprises can collaborate with
customers, partners and employees in the context of the task at hand for
greater productivity and cost savings."
